Desde la creación del programa MBSR por John Kabat-Zinn, el interés académico por el mindfulness ha ido creciendo y, consecuentemente, los estudios académicos que pretenden contrastar su eficacia y sus efectos han ido aumentando, haciéndolo de forma exponencial en los últimos años, como se puede observar en el gráfico de la American Mindfulness Research Association.
Por su número solo podemos hacer referencia a unos pocos de estos estudios. Estos artículos muestran los efectos del minfulness sobre el cerebro, sobre la reducción del estrés, sobre la sensación de bienestar... también sobre los beneficios y riesgos de la práctica.
